DSA personnel were responsible for the re-design, manufacture and testing of a modular system (IRIS) used to screen commercial motor vehicles for running gear related defects. 'IRIS' consists of an infrared and CCD color camera mounted in a fiber optic gyro stabilized turret housing attached to a van. The cameras are remotely controlled by an operator from within the vehicle and connected to a monitoring and documentation system.
Refinements implemented by DSA to the IRIS system include; the replacement of the conventional documentation and monitoring system with a new computer-based recording system and flat screen monitor as well as new power distribution, circuit protection and communication systems. DSA personnel successfully deployed four new mobile IRIS units and trained operators at the winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah.
