The SPT-16 was designed by famed underwater pioneer Jacques Piccard, and manufactured by Sulzer Brothers Limited (Sulzer Thermtec AG) located in Wintertur, Switzerland in 1992. The SPT-16 is a moderately sized tourist submersible and represents a departure from the larger 'Greyhound buses', which are so common in this industry today. The SPT-16 is capable of carrying 16 passengers to depths of 100 meters (330 feet) approximately eight times per day. Remarkably large and uniquely configured spherical sector side viewports provide spectacular viewing for the occupants.
DSA personnel were responsible for the initial certification of this vessel after it was sold by Sulzer to a buyer in Miami, Florida. DSA resolved all of the outstanding issues with ABS and successfully completed construction of the boat both on budget and on time. The vessel was transported to Key West in 1996 and has been in storage at the Safe Harbour Marina on Stock Island ever since.
Recently, DSA personnel were hired to conduct a condition survey and refit analysis for a client that is interested in purchasing and restoring this submersible to operational service.
The SPT-16 is currently in "laid up" with ABS and is available for sale. Interested parties should contact us with questions.
